The Tomato in America: Early History, Culture, and Cookery - Andrew F. Smith

Who knew the tomato was such a controversial fruit?

From widespread refusal to eat tomatoes due to its “stench” to a tomato mania that culminated in a fight between two companies manufacturing tomato compound pills, Smith tracks the history of the tomato in the United States. I thought I would skim this and glean a few interesting factoids, but instead ended up devouring the darn thing in one sitting. Two green thumbs up.

And my Moskvitch tomatoes are happily germinating under a grow light in the basement.
