Frightening Photo Manipulation

Boing Boing today published a link to a guy who retouches photos for a living. All of a sudden, I don’t feel all that bad about myself.

I am, however, disturbed, mainly because a google search unearthed Baby Photo Retouch–retouched photos of stillborn babies. The whole thing is sad, but these photos are horrifying. The before pictures are gruesome; the after just plain macabre.

As you can see.

I understand the shock that anyone would have in coming across this website. As a grandmother of twin boys that died at 23 weeks we (especially their parents) were devistated. We have other grandchildren and these parents have other children. In order to honor these boys they wanted a decent photo that could be placed with other photos. This woman (not a man) who does this is a blessing to parents of deceased babies. I do believe this is a personal choice for each parent that endures this kind of loss. Unless you have experienced this do not make such rediculous random comments. I pray that you never have to go through such a thing. Since I have, to be able to see my beautiful grandchildren in such a way that is not so “macabre” as you stated is a blessing. For my very young grandchildren that were the siblings of these twins to be able to see their brothers in a more “normal” way is a blessing. I will pray that you will never have to go through this and that in some way you will be more understanding of others choices and reasons for these choices.

    Hi Laurie,

I seem to have touched a nerve with this, and for that I am sorry. I am also sorry you have had to go through such an experience, and am glad that the photos were able to give you peace. Frankly, I don’t know how I would cope in such a situation–would I choose to have these pictures done? Would I decide not to? I don’t know. At the same time–and with full respect for the choices of others–it still strikes me as macabre.
