I know the current Volvo's are reaching into the Ford parts-bin a bit. The XC-90, for instance, now uses a V-8 straight from Ford. It does work a bit both ways. The new European version of the Ford Focus is a re-skinned S40. We don't get that here, however...

Couple more FJ links:

The Element's lack of ground clearance seems like it would be a major problem if you go offroad at all. Yeah, I know Volvo's owned by Ford ... do you think that makes a difference?

I'm in car look mode too. But, it will be on my return from Turkey (if I ever get to Turkey). I like the new Outbacks. It truly is the perfect fit for my lifestyle. However, I've had three Subbies and it's time for a change. The Element appeals to the Engineer in me, but the small four cylinder and lack of ground clearance does not appeal to the man in me.

Toyota has a fun SUV coming out in spring; the FJ Cruiser: http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/future/fj_cruiser/index.html

But what I am really looking at is a Hummer. No, not the super-massive sized H1 or the massive sized H2. The smaller than and X-Terra H3. And it gets better gas mileage than an X-Terra. And, it doesn't have tunnels around the gages. I haven't driven one yet, but I think it's a winner.

As for Volvo, they are owned by Ford now... You might want to look for a used 850.
