The End of an Era

I have decided to buy a new car.

For those of you who know me, this is probably a shocker. I have been driving my 1974 BMW 2002 for the past five years, happily zipping around corners with a roaring engine. And though I still love the darn thing, it’s time to accelerate into the 21st century and get a car that doesn’t shimmy at speeds above 60 mph.

I’d like to think that I’m above thinking that one’s car reflects one’s personality. I’m not. There isn’t a single new car (that I can afford, anyway) that looks nearly as cool as an old 2002. Still, the time has come.

Today, I started the official search at a Subaru dealership. I like Subarus. I like everything about them–except the fact that everyone else likes them too. And I have this fear: If I buy a Subaru, will I become my own worst nightmare? Will I suddenly have two kids and a chocolate lab? Will I start shopping solely at PCC? Even worse, will I become the person who actually believes in the segregated scoop?

I think you won’t become your own worst nightmare….I wouldn’t say Subarus are ‘two kids and a chocolate lab’…heck, I could tell ya that every friggin’ flannel wearing lesbian couple in Portland has a Subaru. They might have the choco lab but not necessarily the 2 kids. I regard Subarus as very very Northwest. I don’t think I ever saw a Subaru the whole time I lived in Ohio! Good luck on buying a new car!!

Yeah, here too. I’ve decided against the Subaru though–less because everyone in the world has one and more because I simply didn’t like driving it. The RAV4 I tested last night … now that’s another story altogether!

I can see you in this car - and you’ll have room for two Labs - and you have to choose the copper color. Its a surfer’s car.

RAV4??? Sorry, I don’t like the way those look. But you can make fun of me when I tell you that I love the way the Honda Element looks.

I like the Elements too, especially since they come in Orange (yeah, yeah, I know, but I choose wines by their labels too…). Plus, Steve was thrilled to learn that there’s an optional SURFER package!!!

Rick, sorry, but that was waaay too much like a hummer …

Like a hummer? I think it looks like a PT Cruiser on ‘roids. But given another choice, I vote for the Element too. Do you know that you can hose down the Elements interior if you need to?

Good luck on the buying experience. Hope you get a saleman with at least half a soul.

Don’t laugh, but I just drove a Mazda Something 3–and loved it.
