It’s not for another week, but we all know I’m a spoiled brat. I love this Kasamatsu Shiro print entitled Shirahone Hot-Spring in Shinshu.
It reminds me of a hot spring in Idaho that was on the old McCall road. It was either 13, 16, or 18 miles down. I could never remember, but somehow we always found it. You walked down a hill and there was an old concrete pool built by the forest service right at river level. During the winter, it flooded out. Very deep, metal pipe sticking out from above. I do miss hot springs in Idaho; there’s nothing like that here.
Oh yes, and the print is a Heisei Edition, meaning it was printed posthumously and fairly recently by the original publisher and from the original blocks. I couldn’t afford it otherwise. But the print makes me happy, so I will suppress my snobbishness at having bought a — sniff! — facsimile.

Hi Zia,
We seem to share the same admiration for Saito, Sekino and Yoshida. Your love for Japanese prints shows in the blogs. I own a few prints by Toshi’s father (Hiroshi) and amazingly enough also two by Tom Kristensen. Tom and I belong to http://www.barenforum.org an online community of woodblock printmakers… so every three months or so we have a print exchange; a nice way to see what others are doing and also build an amazing collection of contemporary prints. You can view prints from all the exchanges online and also use the large woodblock encyclopedia and download book selections.
All the best to you and happy collecting…Julio
Julio,
Thanks so much for the recommendation–I’ve been looking for a good place that recommends modern printmakers. I found Tom Kristensen through an article on artelino, but I seem to spend a lot of time trawling through various sites–so thanks again!
Are you an artist as well?
Happy Birthday Munshi,
When you make it back to Boise I’ll give you directions to the hotspring and you and Steve can take Jenny the Ferocious. She loves it up there.
Have a good one!
Chris

[…] Last November, I ordered a Heisei edition of this print for a birthday present to myself– and then cancelled the order because I bought the new car. I’ve coveted this print ever since. […]
