The White Rose - Jean Hanff Korelitz

First of all, let me say that the first three pages were rapturous, not only in their description — of a woman with her lover — but in the sheer delight of the prose. It was breathtaking.
And then the story took hold, which was even more breathtaking.
The White Rose is a modern-day reenactment of Strauss’ Die Rosenkavalier set in New York. Marian Kahn is a 48-year old academic who, much to her surprise, has written a historical blockbuster. She is also conducting an affair with the 26-year old son of her oldest friend. Marian knows the relationship cannot last. And of course it can’t. Meanwhile, her cousin announces his marriage to a young woman, and naturally the lives of all become inextricably tangled.
The amazing thing to me was not that this was a retelling of a comic opera, but that Korelitz manages to pull it off. Successfully. Highly recommend.
