Riddle-Master - Patricia A. McKillip

Riddle-MasterFunnily enough, I read somewhere this was a good book (actually, a trilogy in one volume), checked it out, never got around to it, unknowingly reading some other books by the same author, realized who it was by, and then checked it out again.

And it wasn’t bad. The blurb said something about finally being something that could compare to Tolkien. Comparisons are odious, as many famous people have said, and I see no reason to compare McKillip’s trilogy to Tolkien. Particularly as I’ve never really been able to get into his stuff. (Although I love Vigo Mortenson in the movies, mainly because he looked so much like Steve. Only Steve’s cleaner.)

But I digress.

Morgon is the land-ruler of Hed, an island inhabited by peace-loving farmers. He wants nothing more than to rule his land. However, his fate has something else in store for him, and he is catapulted into a journey for the higher being of his world–a person who ends up being not quite what he anticipated. And perhaps not even who he says he is. Truly imaginative, with sections that are immensely touching and poignant. Recommend for those like me, who like some fantasy (particularly kiddie lit) but aren’t diehard fantasy and scifi readers.
