Hi Jaime,

Thanks for leaving your comment--and sorry it's taken me so long to respond. It's always nice to get differing opinions. Personally, I thought in terms of playing around with the genre, The Crimson Petal and the White did a much better (and for me, a much more interesting) job. But then again, it takes all kinds ...

Actually, I have to say I really loved this book. It played around with the genre (and our expectations of it) very cleverly, while also satisfying on an emotional level. It certainly wasn't a philosophical dissertation, and I found nothing "didactic" about it at all. A terrific read that I recommend to all!

Hi Becky, and welcome! In fact, that's how I found your blog -- by doing a technorati search on Misfortune! I was heartened that I was not alone in that opinion of the book.

I just read this recently. We have the same opinion about it -- just not as good as it could have been. I also thought of Tipping the Velvet when I read it -- that was a good book, better than Misfortune. Here's a link to my post about Misfortune: http://abookaweek.blogspot.com/2006/01/misfortune-by-wesley-stace.html.

(And thanks for your comment about romance novels; I know many well-educated, well-read women who love them, and I'm trying to wave the flag for all of us.)
