I'm so glad to find someone who shares my disgust at this list. I thought about posting a complaint on my blog, but didn't, mostly because I have read only a tiny percentage of these books, and so felt that I might lack credibility ("how can you say these are bad books when you haven't read them?"). But that's kind of my point. I don't WANT to read any of these books. They are so, I don't know, so MALE, so East Coast, so awfully unreadable! I agree with you that some of the judges are writing things that are far more interesting than the books they selected (Michael Chabon, Mary Gordon, Ann Patchett, Anne Tyler, Jane Smily, Jonathan Lethem, John Irving). Maybe I WILL post something...

Independence Day by Richard Ford - read it if you can; and you may gain some insight on the male psyche on the verge of a midlife crisis. I'm a fan, have read most of his books. :-)
