Princess Academy - Shannon Hale

This was kiddie lit that someone recommended on a blog somewhere, but I can’t remember where. Miri lives in an isolated mountain community, in which they make a living from working a particular stone in the local quarry. She alone is not allowed to go into the quarries, and feels like a failure because of it. The king’s men announce that the priests have foretold the new queen will come from the village; all the girls are taken away and educated in the princess academy. While there, Miri discovers her own strengths to the benefit of herself and her village. This was okay kiddie lit, but not that compelling.
