The Wonder Spot This series of linked stories follows the life of Sophie Appelbaum, who is always left somewhat on the edge and for whom existence seems to be a series of mild disappointments. From school to career, dating and beyond, this is the literary version of Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is?” Still, Sophie prevails, and the reader closes the covers feeling older and more battered — but still hopeful.
