On Car Accidents
by Zia ~ October 2nd, 2006. Filed under: Exigencies.Saturday night, Steve and I went to La Medusa for dinner — a restaurant in Columbia City that we’ve been meaning to try out for a long time. Every time we’ve gone in there on a whim, they’ve laughed when we say, “A reservation? No, we don’t have one.” So I finally made a reservation. It was worth it. We even splurged on dessert. We left fat and happy. On the way home, we passed our local Safeway and wondered why the street lights were out.
Two blocks later, we found out why.
At the corner of 57th and Rainier — right around the corner from our house — there was a hideous car accident. One completely smushed, upside-down car in the middle of the intersection and a completely severed power pole. Dead bodies lying around, including one that had been cut in half. The impact was so great (they were going between 80 and 100 in a 35 zone), that there was one body that had been thrown over a metal fence.
S and I have both been a little freaked ever since. The thing is, we could have been there. Police estimate it occured at about 8:40. We were there about ten to fifteen minutes later. Today, we were out and about. I didn’t even realize that I was just meandering along in the slow lane until Steve looked at me and said, “You know, ever since the accident, I’ve been driving really slow too.”
So here’s the lesson: Don’t drive too fast. And always have dessert.
