Granite vs. Silestone
by Zia ~ July 11th, 2007. Filed under: House. One of Steve’s contractors is giving us a deal on granite countertops. So last night we went to their web site. And now, we’re wondering: should we do silestone instead?
Here’s the thing: I spill things. Coffee, oil, vinegar, all the stuff that stains. Am I capable of maintaining granite? Steve says, rather insultingly, an emphatic NO. He’s probably right. So has anyone out there actually seen silestone? Used it? Have an opinion?

Can you get your granite with a honed finish, rather than polished shiny? We did that with our slate, and it’s not only gorgeous (and more-natural looking), but it also makes it a lot less noticeable when there are drops of water or bits of food on it. We still are very diligent about wiping up anything acidic or oily, but the pattern and color (and sheen, or lack thereof) are pretty forgiving.
We looked at Silestone and all the other manufactured stones for our kitchen, and we really didn’t like them — both the look and feel are still pretty unnatural, to my eye.

Try Korian (sp? Corian) It’s a synthetic but has a stone feel and it’s apparently easy to maintain.
