I don't know, but you can't get protopic without a prescription. Without insurance, it's also really expensive--like $200 a tube or something insane.

Hi Basavaraj,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a tough time. I would really recommend that you visit a good doctor or naturopath who is up on the latest therapies, and perhaps also talk to a therapist about your difficulties. Best wishes.

Hi Uday, Yeah, it seems like some of my spots may be coming back too on my face, though I'm not 100% certain. I don't know why it seems to have a high success rate on the face but nowhere else. But that seems to be the consensus.

Hello:

My daughter has vitiligo. We applied protopic on face, spot close to her eye and got 100 % positive result. The spots white spots again came back after 3-4 months.
Protopic was less effective on other parts (forarm, legs) of the body. This has anything to do with the skin thickness where you are applying ?

Hi Shane,

My face completely repigmented this summer using protopic, and I confess that I haven't been using it anymore. I've read that it has a very high success rate on the face, but less elsewhere. In any case, it was the .1%. I believe the .03% is used for kids.

The brands of what I take tends to switch as I run out of things--and I tend to think the brand doesn't really matter anyway--but a lot of the pills are Jarrow, some are Carlson, and some are the PCC (local health food store) store brand. I am currently taking:

5000 IU vitamin D
1,000 mg tyrosine
500 mg vitamin c (pill also comes with 500 mg citrus bioflavenoid)
15 mg zinc with 1 mg copper (this is a single pill, jarrow formulas)
5 mg b12
5 mg folic
(in addition to these individual Bs, I also take a complete B complex, just because I'd heard that you need to take them all together)

I'm also taking q10 and iron.

Hey Zia,
I was wondering if you can clear up some confusion about the amount of vitamin supplements you have been taking. Are you taking mcg or mg quantities of each and which brands are you using. Thanks.

Oh god, I couldn't choke that down either. I just meant whether you've cooked with it at all. Yeah, those supplements sure take a lot of time, don't they?

I haven't used coconut oil. I'm already taking more supplements than seems humanly possible on some days and I haven't added that one. (yet) I doubt I could choke down six tablespoons of any oil no matter what it was reputed to do. I'd be gagging on the first spoonful and barfing on the second.

Oh, and thanks for the congratulations! I started to write that I don't know that there's been a lot of improvement because I see some places improving and some getting worse. But I should take what I can get, and ultimately, I am no longer nearly so depressed or freaked out now that I don't have to wear makeup to cover it. (Knock on wood .... ) And yes, just feeling healthier makes a difference. I don't think I was BAD before, but I certainly have a weakness for sugary, starchy things like cookies, and after all, there's always room for improvement.

Re the coconut oil: do you use it? If so, have you noticed a difference in anything?

Hi Barbara! You are so right that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I mean, I can't believe that there are people who eat 6 tb of coconut oil a day STRAIGHT. However healthy the stuff may or may not be, how can eating that much oil straight be good for you?? But it's interesting because I do feel there is a bit of truth in the whole saturated-fats-cause-woe-debunking camp. Moderation, as they say ... Not that I'm particularly good at being moderate. :-) But I look at my mother who has great skin, low cholesterol, and generally excellent health at 63, and she has eaten butter and at least 2 eggs a day for the past 40 years.

It sounds as if you've had a great deal of improvement. Congratulations. I'm sure the cooking with organic whole food ingredients has improved your overall health as well. I've read the coconut oil sites as well. Seemingly it can do everything but reverse global warming. I remember when coconut oil was being "exposed" as a nutritional bogeyman on shows like 60 Minutes, when it was used to pop theater popcorn. Back then it was said to be responsible for most of our ill health. Now it's a panacea. And the truth lies somewhere in the middle...
